Description
Western Apache Felt Cap
early 20th century
height 4-1/2 inches x diameter 7-1/4 inches
This cap, which was worn on social occasions, was made in the early part of this century. Â It was given to Forrest in 1958 by an elderly Apache woman who said it had been made and used by her father. Â Upon his death, the hat was retired to a shelf in her house and was not touched for many years. Â A close inspection reveals an exterior that is much faded with time, while the interior remains pristine with the original strong, brown color of the felt looking new (Hanson 1994: 193).
