Item Details
Description
Wood engraving of Sparta, Perusia, the capital of the Italian region of Umbria, by Hartmann Schedel 1493. An incunabula leaf from the famous Liber Chronicarum, also known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, printed in 1493. Sheet number XXVIII. The wood cutter was Michael Wolgemuth, Albrecht Durer's famous teacher, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleidenwurf. Wolgemuth was Albrecht Durer's teacher between 1486-90. As the young Durer worked at Wolgemuth's printing house during the production of the plates for the Nuremberg Chronicle, he may also have collaborated, as some of the cuts bear a striking resemblance to his illustrations for the Apocalypse. Sheet size: 16” x 11” inches / 40 cm x 28 cm.
