1789 NY Governor George Clinton Signed Militia Appointment Commission the Year of George Washington's Inauguration to the later First Judge of Washington County
GEORGE CLINTON (1739-1812). Considered one of the "Founding Fathers" of the United States; Governor of New York from 1777 to 1795, again from 1801 to 1804, then served as the 4th Vice President of the U.S. from 1805 to 1812.
February 28, 1789-Dated Federal Period, Partially-Printed Document Signed, "Geo. Clinton" as Governor, 2 pages, measuring 14" x 20.5", New York, Very Fine. Document Appointing Anthony James Blanchard as an Ensign in the City and County of New York Militia. Fully intact Paper and Wax Official Seal at upper left, even overall tone, Countersigned by Robert Harpur, as Secretary June 13th, 1789. A "Colonial Era Pin" attached second page with an extensive Signed Statement of his Oath officially sworn before Rob. Benson, Clerk. Docket reads: "Ensn. A. Blanchard's - Commission" on blank reverse of 2nd page. Fold separations, edge chipping at bottom. Boldly signed "Geo. Clinton" with his flourish below written in the left margin beneath the Seal.
Anthony James Blanchard (1768-1853) was an attorney practicing in Salem, NY, who was Appointed in 1796 assistant Attorney General for the district by Governor John Jay, and, in 1810, became First Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Washington County.
