Item Details
Description
An original Mormon family pictorial archive from Box Elder County's Peter Johnson, c 1870s. Johnson was a polygamist. In the late 1880s, Utah had made moves to become a State within the United States. Part of the agreement with the Government was an eradication of polygamy. The history of the ensuing events is not clear, but it appears prominent members of the polygamist communities in each Utah county were arrested and imprisoned at the Utah State Prison for an undetermined amount of time. Peter Johnson was one of them. These men were later paraded in front of a photographer in front of the Utah State Prison, each photograph including the Warden. Many examples of these photographs can be found on the web, but not this photo. It appears groups of the imprisoned were photographed county by county. The family kept this original matted large photo of Johnson and his prison mates. On the back of the photo, published here, are the names of the people, which includes some prominent men within the Church. All here are from Box Elder County. It is this photo that puts the four large pictorial pieces in perspective. A copy accompanies this lot.The lot includes three Johnson family males. Two are unidentified, and assumed to be direct family, since the trio, and the fourth mammoth plate photo of the building of the Temple in Salt Lake (photographer "S & J Photo, Salt Lake") all hung in a family home through the circa 1970s. All four images are in identical late 19th century frames, some in need of reverse restoration, though the contents are near perfect. Each original charcoal art sketch of the men is about 16 x 20" with overall frame sizes about 27 x 31". The Temple construction mammoth plate photograph was taken by Sainsbury & Johnson. Sainsbury had apprenticed under famous Utah Photographer Charles Savage. His partnership with Johnson was approximately 1884-1893, according to Mautz. This phot is mid-stage in construction, thus perhaps 1890-1891.Date: Country (if not USA): State: UtahCity: Salt Lake CityProvenance:
