Description
James Jacques TISSOT (1836-1902): "The Newspaper" / "Le Journal" (original French title). Etching and drypoint printed on light gray laid paper, 1883. Reference: Wentworth 73c. Wentworth's trial proof "c"; actually very likely a fourth state of seven, as per the pencil annotation (see below). A very scarce, possibly unique state proof, before the edition in the seventh state. Before extensive additional shading in the chestnut leaves in the background. This is Wentworth's personal impression; very likely the one reproduced in his catalog raisonne (page 285). Annotated "4e etat/VII" in pencil (possibly by Jean-Claude Romand, Sagot-Le Garrec, Paris), lower left sheet corner. Provenance: Michael Wentworth, with his stamp, Lugt 4860 (www.marquesdecollections.fr). Bearing the red "JCC" collector stamp in the bottom margin. Plate: 14 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches.
