I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this photo (and the preceding companion view) two days ago (as I type this) at the Ohio Gun Colletors Association Show, in Wilmington, Ohio. I said to the seller -Now that's something you don't see every day-. I bought them and a real nice pre WW-1 flag listed elsewhere. This is a professional photographer-s product, not an amateur snapshot. The mount is roughly 8 x 10, heavy grey card stock. The subject is incredible, a proud procession of hundreds of KKK members marching along a rural road or highway with a lone farmhouse in the distance. This image was taken minutes before the companion photo offered in the previous lot. These robed and hooded Klansmen men were at the front of the procession. The companion photo shows civilian marchers and motor vehicles bringing up the rear. This parade must take up half a mile of roadway. Our photographic artist positioned his camera strategically elevated across the road for a great raking view of the procession. Look closely at the illustrations. What strikes me as odd is why this march is taking place along a rural road with no lookers-on. No markings on the photo except a note on the back reading Probably Western Pa? My research this morning finds that these photos were in fact taken near Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1929. The West Virginia University's West Virginia and Regional History Center has a companion view in their collection. The KKK was very active in West Virginia in the 1920's in Clarksburg, Parkersburg, Williamson, and McDowell County. Whatever this event was, it was significant to this band of Confederate Nathan Bedford Forest fans. Nearing 100 years old.
