Description
The British Steamer Strathleven Oil on canvas Signed with initials and dated 1876 Size: 26 x 40 in. Strathleven, along with Dunedin, was central to the nascent frozen meat trade during the 19th century. She was built in 1875, also in Glasgow,by Blackwood and Gordon for Burrell and Son; she, however, was an iron steamer. She had a gross tonnage of 2436 and was 320 ft long. In 1880, Strathleven sailed from Australia to theUK with a cargo of frozen meat, 50 tons of frozen beef and mutton, which was the first time this had been achieved. The vessel was abandoned in 1901 when she damaged by a storm. She was en route to Barcelona with a cargo of phosphorous.https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/
