A good George III carved white and Sienna marble chimneypiece
circa 1790
the moulded inverted breakfront shelf above a running figural frieze depicting putti playing a game of Blind Man's Buff flanked to either side by a small statue of a classical male youth raised on a draped pedestal and a classical female bust raised on a tripartite stand, between a pair of fluted panels, the headers decorated with figures of putti playing battledore and shuttlecock, the jambs as pendant figural pilaster panels, each with a skipping putto on bell husk festoon hung swept platform bracket above a ribbon tied florette roundel and leafy palette urn shaped vase raised on fluted circular pedestal, mounted on block feet, the inner Siena marble slip with moulded edges, 143cm high, 183cm wide, 18cm deep, the internal aperture, 93.5cm high, 108cm wide approximately

In overall good decorative condition commensurate with age and use, the chimney piece has been cleaned and restored, and it is likely that the upper part of the shelf may have been replaced, and there have been a number of restorations which are as follows:

To the shelf to the moulded border below where there is a restored break which is above and slightly to the right of the two putti to the central tablet and similarly to the same border to the projecting right hand side of the breakfront above the putto to the jamb header, below this to the moulded border above the tablet to the left hand side there are two breaks which are restored and filled which are above the carved figure standing on the circular pedestal to the central tablet. There is also an old restored break to this moulded border above the right hand figural jamb header panel to the right hand side.

There is a broken and restored corner to the left hand putto to the jamb header, and to the central moulded outer border below the tablet there are two filled and restored breaks, the right hand carved panel to the jamb has a cracked and discoloured section to the top right beside the putto, this may just be a crack which has discoloured but it could also be re-stuck, the left hand carved panel to the jamb has an old restored break below the flowerhead patera and there are some small chips to the corners of the block feet.

The inner siena marble slip, which is comprised of three sections, has numerous old restored breaks and in-filled sections, some of these breaks have been in-filled and coloured but these have discoloured so are slightly more obvious and there are also a few gaps within the cracks. the marble central tablet is in good condition with some minor wear and there is some minor discolouration and spots and yellowing in places.
