  • Debating the Louisiana Purchase. ;Boston Gazette. Boston, August 11, 1803. Long article headed "Louisiana" discussing ;the possible acquisition of Louisiana from the French, the question of whether the ;purchase merits the $15 million price, whether lands west of the Mississippi are to be ;included, and more. ;


  • Lewis and Clark set out on their expedition ;The Balance and Columbian Repository. Hudson, June 26, 1804. ;A page 7 report from "a gentleman at St. Louis, on the Mississippi," dated May 5: "A ;gentleman at St. Louis, on the Mississippi, under date of May 5th, 1804, writes that ;"Capt. Lewis, who had been sent by the President of the United States, to explore the ;newly acquired territory of Louisiana, was at that place, and intended leaving it in a few ;days on his return to the city of Washington [?], accompanied by 20 Indian Chiefs." The ;Corps of Discovery left Camp Dubois on May 14, 1804.


  • Lewis reports on the expedition upon his return. ;Massachusetts Spy. Worcester, November 12, 1806. Page 2 announcement of "the ;arrival of Captain Lewis, with his exploring party, at St. Louis." The article discusses at ;length the letter from Lewis to Jefferson detailing the history of the expedition, stating in ;small part, "He found it two thousand five hundred and seventy five miles from the ;mouth of the Missouri to the greatest falls of that river, thence by land passing the ;Rocky mountains to a navigable part of the Kooakooake three hundred and forty miles, ;of which two hundred would admit good road, and one hundred forty miles over ;tremendous mountains which for sixty miles, are covered with eternal snows...in all ;three thousand five hundred and fifty five miles from the mouth of the Missouri to the ;mouth of the Columbia.... He lays it fortunate he did not send back from the head of the ;Missouri any part of his force, consisting of thirty one men, as more than once they ;owed their lives and the fate of the expedition to their numbers..."


  • Jefferson reports on the success of Lewis and Clark. The Repertory. Boston, December 12, 1806. Front page printing of Thomas Jefferson's State of the Union message including discussion of the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark: "The expedition of Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, for exploring the river Missouri, and the best communications from that to the Pacifick Ocean, has had all the success which could have been expected. They have traced the Missouri nearly to its source, descended the Columbia to the Pacifick Ocean, ascertained with accuracy the geography of that interesting communication across our continent, learnt the character of our country, of its commerce and inhabitants, and it is but justice to say, that Messrs. Lewis and Clarke and their brave companions, have, by this arduous service, deserved well of their country."


  • Prospectus for the official account of the expedition. ;Aurora General Advertiser. Philadelphia, July 21, 1807. Prints on the back page a long, ;detailed prospectus for the planned official printed account of the Lewis and Clark ;expedition in two volumes, with detailed discussion of the contents. Includes a ;discussion of the separately printed map, measuring 5 ft 8 in x 3 ft 10 in. Subscriptions ;are solicited at $10 for the first volume, $11 for the second, and $10 for the map. In the ;end publication did not take place until 1814. Chipped at top affecting one word.


  • Death of William Clark ;The Atlas. Boston, September 20, 1838. Page one report of the death of William Clark, ;"one of the earliest and bravest of the Pioneers of the West, and associate of General ;Merriwether [sic] Lewis in the famous expedition across the Rocky Mountains under ;Jefferson's administration." The article continues with a detailed discussion of Clark's ;accomplishments.
