Item Details
Description
Rare recamier or Grecian taste sofa attributed to the workshop of Duncan Phyfe, New York City, ca. 1805, with brass-nailed black horsehair upholstery within mahogany reeded frame and scrolling reeded arms (maple secondary wood support rails), the seat rail with ribbon-bound sheaves of wheat and drapery festoons in low relief, the head with curving armrest, the foot with oval bolster with exceptionally well-carved rosette facing, the whole above splayed "cornucopia" legs on parcel gilt hairy paw feet with brass casters. 33" H x 90" L x 27" D x 16" seat Provenance: Property from an American Collection at 1040 Park Avenue Note: The offered lot bears comparison to a recamier with similar carving in the collection of George and Linda Kauffman, illustrated in Michael Flanagan, "American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection", fig. 58. It is also comparable to an example currently in the American trade. All three sofas are united by their unique proportions as well as the uncommonly large, varied, and well-carved rosettes at the foot of the sofa, which may be by the same hand.
Condition
Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Timepiece movements, lighting and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated. Auctions at Showplace does not provide any shipping or packing services. We happily provide a list of recommended shippers who can provide shipping quotes prior to bidding.
