Item Details
Description
A rare 1907 REO Model A 5-Passenger Touring Car. This early and unusual automobile was born in the golden age of the horseless carriage. It first caught the imagination of George Henry Grey of Bury, Quebec and would soon become the first horseless carriage to pass down Wellington Street in the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec. In 1907 Grey walked from Bury, Quebec to Lansing, Michigan to claim his newly purchased car. On his return trip he lost control of the vehicle, inflicting damage to the passenger's side front wheel. The repair, which accounts for three sturdy carriage bolts fastened by square nuts through a 6-inch span on the passenger side rim - is all that remains of Grey's ill-fated return. Grey sold it after five years of faithful service. In 1994, after being sold two more times, George Henry Grey's son, George Henry Grey Jr, bought it back into the Grey family. After Grey Jr.'s death, it eventually found a home at the Horseless Carriage Museum, Fenelon Falls. Although the vehicle was entirely restored in 2006, the car has not been in operation since the museum founder's illness. This rare and remarkable vehicle was the brainchild of Ransom E. Olds (creator of the curved dash Oldsmobile) and the museum's curators spared no expense to outfit it with hard to find accessories. It boasts an irreplaceable set of acetylene headlamps and carriage lamps. Interestingly, the brass cylinder protruding from above the radiator is not a radiator cap - it is a watertight vesta with a removable cap for holding matches to light the acetylene lamps. It retains the original bent wood fenders, brass-strapped rad housing (unique to this year), and the original two-opposed cylinder engine. Very seldom does such an opportunity arise.
