Description
Zhu Dequn (Chinese)
A calligraphy poem
Ink on paper
With an inscription and four seals to recto.
Dimensions with frame: H: 24 3/4, W: 31 in.; H: 62.87, W: 78.74 cm.This example of calligraphy scribes the poem, "Night Mooring at Maple Bridge" by Zhang Ji, a famous poet from Tang dynasty. It reads: "A crow cries, the moon sets in a frost filled sky River Maple and fishing boat lights keep company on a sorrowful night At Hanshan Temple outside Gusu On my boat, a midnight bell rings for me." Zhu Dequn (Chu Teh-Chun, 10/24/1920 – 3/26/2014), formerly known as Zhu Decui, was a Chinese-French oil painter and the first Chinese academician to attend the French Academy of Arts. Decui and along with artists Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki, are dubbed as the 'Three Musketeers' in Chinese art circles. Zhu Dequn's calligraphy breaks free from the restrictions of orthodox Chinese art through the integration of calligraphy with abstract oil painting, where wild cursive writing and unbridled abstract forms complement each other. Zhu's cursive style is fluent, distinct and with strong artistic expression. Zhu also adored poetry and often transcribed poems of the Tang and Song dynasties. Zhu's works have high collection value, and their price has been increasing over the years in various auction markets.
