Description

An American large size White House cast iron garden bench, rococo revival style circa 1850-75, in very good condition in old green paint over layers of paint - commonly referred to as the Rose Garden White House bench per President Fillmore's directive to place these benches around the White House. Note the cabriole back legs which are more typical of American benches rather than the straight designs found on similar European versions. The following information from the White House Historical Association: "Gardening was one of President Fillmore's passions. He developed plans to improve the south grounds of the White House, which used to be a swamp. This cast iron bench, one of many ordered for the White House, still sits on the South Lawn today. Attributed to Janes, Beebe & Co., New York, 1852.".This bench measures 64"W x 37"H x 19 3/4"D.
