Description
A silver dish and cover on stand, A silver dish and cover on stand, by Joseph Wilson or John Wakefield, London 1822/23, engraved with the Marital Arms of Campbell and Hale, the cover with a bird finial and profusely decorated with cast and chased leaves, flowers and rocaille scrolls and shells, 26cm diameter, 14cm high, 35ozt (3) These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing the arms of the husband over the entire surface of the shield, whilst the arms of the wife as a heraldic heiress are placed on a small shield (known as an escutcheon of pretence) centrally on the husband's arms. These arms undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Hugh Montgomery Campbell (baptised 7 January 1794, died 30 May 1846), of the Hollies, Stourbridge in the County of Staffordshire and Mary Hale (baptised 7 November 1796, died December 1842). Hugh and Mary were married at the Parish Church of St Mary, Enville in the County of Staffordshire on the 12 July 1821. Hugh was the third son of Archibald Montgomery Campbell and his wife, Ann Humphries, whilst Mary was the only daughter and heiress of John Hale Esq. of The Hollies aforesaid and his wife, Polly Devey. Hugh was a member of a cadet branch of the family of Campbell of Barrichbeyan in the County of Argyllshire through the Ballachlavan and Askomel lines of the family. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1818. The 1841 Census for England and Wales states the Hugh was of independent means. The hallmarking of this dish and cover on its stand meshes in well with the marriage of Hugh and Mary. Undoubtedly it was acquired a year or two after their marriage. Condition Report: Light wear in places, the marks largely clear makers mark slightly obscured.
