Description
Soshana Afroyim New York Austrian Artist Modernist Museum Quality Original watercolor, signed and dated 1979, 13 1/4 x 9 3/8". Inscription on verso reads, " To Lou, in memory of our meeting in Guam, Dec. 79, Soshana"
Born in Vienna to Jewish parents, Soshana Afroyim, real name Susanne Schüller, fled with her family to Paris and London in 1938 and to the United States in 1941. In New York she attended Washington Irving High School and received painting lessons from her future husband Beys Afroyim. The couple traveled through America and Europe together and temporarily lived in Havana, where Soshana had her first solo exhibition in the Circulo de Bellas Artes. After their divorce in 1950, the artist moved to Vienna with their son and studied first at the University of Applied Arts and later at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1952 Afroyim moved to Paris. Here she worked in the former studio of Paul Gauguin and made acquaintance among others with Jean-Paul Sartre, Alberto Giacometti, Pinot Gallizio, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso. At the end of the 1950s, Soshana Afroyim was in close contact with the Nordic COBRA group around Asger Jorn and went on extensive trips around the world. In 1974 she settled in New York until 1985 until her death in Vienna. While Soshana's early work mainly featured representational representations - namely landscapes and portraits - her oeuvre from the 1950s onwards comprised almost exclusively abstract compositions. Inspired by the spontaneous and gestural painting process of the Informel, the artist developed paintings with calligraphic and surrealist elements.
