Symbolic Ribbon Series
Late 20th Century
The airborne ribbon twines among floating orbs with the artist's signature being found verso on the stretcher and again the canvas.
Jim Burnett said of his Ribbon Series, 'My goal in this series was to visually interpret the ideas of positive and negative thought. I chose a ribbon to be symbolic of positive thought and solid forms to be symbolic of negative thought.'
James Thomas Burnett was born October 14, 1949 in Waterloo, Iowa. He was educated in public and private schools in Iowa, Washington, D.C. and Falls Church, Virginia where he graduated in 1968. He received a Bachelor's of Science in Art Education degree from Central Missouri State University in 1975. After working for Time Magazine in Los Angeles, he returned to Missouri and was an art instructor for 10 years before undertaking work on a Master of Fine Arts degree which he completed at the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1988. He continued to paint and pursue his interests in the arts for the rest of his life. Jim Burnett was a member of the American Craft Council, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Friends of Art/Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kansas City Artists' Coalition, the Historic Kansas City Foundation and the Missouri State Teachers Association.
Canvas measures 40 x 60 inches.
