Description
A Chinese cloisonne censer
Ming dynasty
With a four-character marking to the underside.
H: 3 3/4, Dia: 4 1/8 in. (H: 9.53, Dia: 10.48 cm.)
Weight: 539.77 g.
Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts.
Cloisonne wares are interpreted as a symbol of royalty and wealth for their magnificence. For a long period of time, cloisonné wares were almost exclusively produced by imperial workshops and used within the palace. Consequently, they were seldom possessed by civilians. This cloisonné censer has a refined shape. The mouth rim and the legs are gilded. It's decorated in a typical Ming fashion - below the rim is a belt of gem-blue ground flora patterning; below the belt is a belly ornate with sky-blue ground pattern with purple-enameled grapes, leaves enameled in different shades of green, and the tips tinted red. On the bottom there is a "Jintai" two-character seal mark.
