Item Details
Description
Andy Warhol (1928-1987 American) ''Flowers'' 1965 Acrylic and Screenprint Inks on Canvas 14''x14''. Signed and dated on verso overlap. Also notated ''Andy Warhol /65 Billy'' on verso. Purchased from Gordon Locksley of the Locksley/Shea Gallery, Minneapolis for $250 originally. The gallery was active in the 1960's and 1970's and held some of the most famous contemporary artists of its time such as Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, Brice Marden, Ellsworth Kelly, and Robert Rauschenberg. Excellent original condition. Provenance: Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Herbert W. Johnson of St. Paul, Minnesota, by descent. Dr. Johnson also purchased a suite of Campbell's Soup Can screenprints around the same time that were donated to The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. They can be found in their archives accrediting him as the donor. A copy of Dr. Johnson's art inventory listing the work will be included. This work has never been exhibited and has been in the private collection since its purchase. A statement from the family, ''While we were children our parents collected several pieces of art. Much of the artwork was acquired by the mid-1970's. The art included pieces by Andy Warhol, Don Judd, Robert Rauschenberg, Georges Braque, Georges Roualt, and John Seery. Our dad's art dealer during the late 1960's and 1970's was Gordon Locksley. Gordon lived on Mount Curve Avenue in St. Paul and held many gala events, some of which my parents attended. My sister and I recall my parents talking about Gordon and his partner George. My sister, mother and I also often had our hair cut at Gordon's beauty salon, the Red Carpet, in downtown Minneapolis. My sister and I are assuming that our parents purchased the Warhol painting through Gordon sometime in the late 1960's or early 1970's. The only written evidence we have of the price is my dad's handwritten, undated list of artwork which lists the 'Warhol Flowers' as costing him $250. The penciled name 'Billy' was on the print when he bought it. My dad decades ago commented that it was Andy's boyfriend at the time (Billy Name). The Warhol piece was at my parents home until their death (2008), then with my sister until 2017 and has been in my home since that time. My parents also owned ten soup can prints of Warhols. My dad's handwritten note indicated that he paid $675 for the prints. My parents donated all ten soup can prints to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 1993. The Walker's website lists these items and references my parents as donors.'' A period 1970's color photograph of a family member sitting at a piano with one of the Warhol soup can prints behind them, will also be included for provenance.
