SAPPHIRE RING, CIRCA 1915-20
The cushion-shaped sapphire in a pierced mount millegrain-set with old cushion-shaped, old brilliant and old single-cut diamonds, between similarly-set shoulders, mounted in platinum, sapphire very approximately 5.00 carats, numbered 1985 and 27892 (rubbed), maker's mark DF, French assay mark, ring size J½

Sapphire of a medium Royal blue hue with some violet tones and good transparency. Under 10 x magnification, a few facet edges with minor surface abrasions seen, together with silk and feather inclusions, all displaying iridescence: silk located beneath central table facet; pavilion facets with a few small surface reaching feathers; some long feather inclusions running vertically through one side of stone (close to pavilion); same side with a rounder feather located just beneath the crown. Nearby chip on one crown facet.

Inside upper band numbered '1985' at one end and '27892' at the other (latter number very rubbed). Outer base of band stamped with maker's mark DF (dog's head facing right between D and F). French assay mark for platinum (mask). Untested white metal with light surface wear and band with evidence of resizing. Overall in good condition. Gross weight approx. 4.0 grams.
