Description
light burgundy crackle satin with enameled floral garland, signed Handel 7094, G.S., 7" with a 3" fitter, excellent....The Handel Company was in business from 1885 to 1936. P. J. Handel became president of the company in 1911 and it was under his leadership that most of the best lamps were made. In their heyday, they had a showroom on Broadway in New York City, but they sold lamps all over the country. The primary feature that makes these lamps so appealing is the fine painting on the glass shades. Some of the bases are beautiful, but the real interest is usually in the reverse painted shades. Nearly all Handel lamps are signed on the shade and most are signed on the base. Usually after the signature on the shade there is a serial number and on some occasions, the artist also signed his/her name. If you think you have a Handel lamp, look inside the rim of the shade for the signature. Do not worry so much if the base is not signed because the company did not start signing bases until 1902.
