Item Details
Description
Japanese Edo period togidashi (polished out) maki-e lacquered tansu, decorated with hawk feathers along the exterior. This piece was reputedly commissioned by the 11th shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ienari. Each hawk feather is unique. The two doors open to reveal six drawers, all over a single large drawer with two pulls. The doors are decorated with scenes of graceful cranes along the interior.

Provenance: Possibly owned by noted antiquarian Ninagawa Noritane; Private Minnesota Collection.
