⁂ A good group of letters concerning the translation and publishing of Tolstoy in English, mostly relating to Resurrection, and his plays. 'Herewith draft of half-title...where are we to insert: "Your translations are very good and I do not wish for better ones" Leo Tolstoy?'. The Maudes lived in Russia for many years, and met Tolstoy in 1888, introduced to him by Peter Alekseyev, a doctor married to Maude's sister Lucy. After the Maudes settled back in England, Tolstoy and Aylmer Maude kept up a regular correspondence, with Maude making occasional trips to Russia to see Tolstoy at his Yasnaya Polyana estate. During his 1902 visit Tolstoy authorized Maude to write his biography.
