Description
Study of a piebald horse in a landscape, with a view of Woodend, Sussex signed and dated 'T. George. Cooper. 1870' (lower left) oil on canvas 60 x 90cm
The house depicted in the present painting is Woodend near Chichester. The ancestral home of the de Bathe family and once home to Sir Hugo Gerald de Bathe, 5th Bt. (1871-1940) and Lady de Bathe (1853-1929), the prominent British socialite and actress.
66.5 x 97cm framed The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The picture is in plane and the canvas tension is good. The paint layers are stable and secure. There are localised areas of overpaint across the painting. In the sky, the overpaint has become pale overtime and is now obvious to the viewer. There is a layer of varnish which is even and glossy, the varnish has yellowed slightly overtime and tide lines are visible in areas. There are scuffs and scratches across the surface. The reverse of the canvas is very dusty and the front surface has a layer of surface dirt with some white splashes.
