Description
Table d'appoint en bois pétrifié
Petrified Wood Console Table
Dipterocarpus sp.
Pliocene
Sumatra, Indonesia
At the end of the Tertiary era (Pliocene), a dense tropical forest, made up of magnolia and palm trees, covers the Indonesian volcanic chain from Sumatra to Java. From time to time, the volcanoes became active. The force of the eruption was such that surrounding forests were uprooted and a thick layer of burning volcanic ash covered them. The silica found in volcanic ash became dissolved in percolating fluids and gradually replaced the wood cell by cell with minerals such as quartz, agate or marble, hence preserving the shape and structure of the trees. Petrified trees are sometimes found in streams, but the most beautiful pieces are found buried several meters deep. The present specimen has been fashioned into a useful, decorative console table featuring a cross-section slab of a large tree which has undergone compression during the lithification process to produce an elliptical shape. With rugged bark texture still visible on all edges, black variegated tones to the center and a polished surface. Wood measuring 95.5 x 28 x 4 cm. Height with metal legs 76 cm
Footnotes:
Raised on three tapered black metal legs which can be removed for transport.
