Indian Art A Chandraketugarh terracotta vase (lota) with Yaksha and YakshiniIndia, West Bengal, Shunga period, 1st century b.C.- 1st century AD. . Cm 17,00 x 21,00. Vase for water (lota) of its classic form with globular body, cylindrical neck and everted mouth. The exterior is finely carved and divided into four registers separated by thin floral bands. On the base there are elephants, symbol of prosperity, among trees; the two central registers are filled with Yaksha and Yakshini, these being male and female spirits of the nature, intent in playful occupations such as songs and dances; the neck is instead reserved to fitomorfe decorations. For a comparative example please see the one preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of New York, acc. n. 2002.266.The lot has a TL test certificate.
