In the later half of his life, Charles Burlingame lived and painted in Rockland County, New York, in the area around Nanuet. The mills depicted in this painting, located in nearby Scotland Hill, were owned by Joseph Horn, the great, great grandfather of the consignor, from about 1835. The mills remained in the family until about 1910, but were lost to fire not long after the completion of this painting.
