Joseph Francis Kernan was a successful artist and illustrator whose nostalgic and humorous artworks appeared on the covers of many national magazines during the 1920s and 1930s, including The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, The Country Gentleman, and Outdoor Life. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Kernan studied at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston, earning money for tuition by playing professional baseball. He also taught at the school for two years before launching his career as an illustrator. Kernan was a true outdoorsman and lover of fishing and hunting, and it was his experience in the field that gave vibrancy and immediacy to his works. As he said, he liked to focus on 'the human side of outdoor sports' chronicling the inevitable, amusing mishaps as well as the triumphs.
