Rare 1818 Map Showing the Battle of Bunker Hill Sketched by Witness Henry de Berniere

Engraved map, Ca. 1818, Charlestown, MA. Entitled "Sketch of the Action on the Heights of Charlestown 17 June 1775 Between His Majestys Troops Under the Command of M. Genl. Howe and a Large Body of American Rebels". Depicts the layout and topography of Charlestown and part of Boston, as well as highlights the positions and advancements of both the British and American troops during the engagement. Several areas on the map have been further emphasized, hand-highlighted in red. A note in the Reference Key helps to explain this, stating: "The parts in red are corrections of the original by Maj Gen H Dearborn…". Expected levels of paper toning and soiling throughout, with minor folds and creasing to edges. Overall, fine condition. Measuring 15.25" x 20.5" and matted to the overall size of 17" x 24".

The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on Saturday, June 17, 1775 during the first stages of the American Revolution as part of the Siege of Boston by British forces. Despite acquiring more than double the casualties than the American side, the battle proved, although sobering,  to be a victory for the British. Ultimately, this early battle would force both sides to engage in more tactical planning in the years to come. De Berniere's original sketch was, purportedly, uncovered in the early 19th century after it was found in a trunk and was later published in Analectic Magazine in 1818.
