Victor Emmanuel III Signed Citizenship Document
2pp partly printed and partly handwritten document in Italian signed by King of Italy Victor Emmanuel III (1869-1947) as "Vittorio Emanuele" at center of second page. The bold and dark signature is enormous, measuring approximately 6.5" x 1.5". Also cosigned by his Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Giovanni Giolitti (1842-1928) as "Giolitti," complete with a 8" long flourish. Stamped and numbered on the first page, and docketed on the second. The bifold watermarked cream paper is in very good to near fine condition, with a large diagonal fold running across the lower right corner of the first page. Light toning to page two, and some mounting traces on the blank fourth page. Each page measures 9.75" x 15".
In Rome on February 11, 1912, King of Italy Victor Emmanuel III granted Italian citizenship to a 50-year-old Romanian man.
"Victor Emmanuel III, by the grace of God and the will of the nation, King of Italy
In view of the request to obtain Italian citizenship presented by Mr. Lazzaro Cernea (formerly Schwartz) born in Bucharest on 24 December 1861 to Abiamo and Rosa Schwartz, Romanian subjects residing in Braila…
We have decreed and decree:
The aforementioned Mr. Lazzaro Cernea (formerly Schwartz) is granted Italian citizenship, under the observance of the conditions and formalities established by Article 10 of the Civil Code. This concession is subject to the payment of the tax established in No. 1 of the table annexed to the law of September 13, 1874…".
Victor Emmanuel III officially ruled as King of Italy between 1900-1946, although he essentially served as a puppet king to Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini between 1925-1943. Victor Emmanuel III also claimed sovereignty over Albania and Ethiopia during World War II. Today, Victor Emmanuel is criticized for accommodating Mussolini and the rise of the Fascists in Italy. Yet the king's ability to withstand so many tumultuous political changes during his reign certainly demonstrates his shrewdness and tenacity.
Giovanni Giolitti was the second-longest serving Prime Minister in Italian history, serving five terms in that office between 1892-1921.
