Beautiful Early Edition of "The Sign of the Four" by Sir Conan Doyle
"The Sign of the Four" by Arthur Conan Doyle. Chicago: E.A. Weeks & Co., n.d. [ca. 1894-5]. Eighteenmo, 5-193pp. Signed on the front free end page by a previous owner in pencil, "Georgie Oradell Roche Coshocton, Ohio." Pink cloth-covered boards with an intricate floral border. Title is printed on the front cover and on the spine. Bumped spine edges and corners, with faint page edge soiling and toning. Overall very fine.
"The Sign of the Four" was Conan Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes story, first published in "Lippincott's Magazine" in February 1890. In the June 7th and 14th, 1890 issues of the story in "The Bristol Observer", there appeared the first illustrations of Holmes wearing a deerstalker hat, prior to the well-known Sidney Paget illustrations.
