Description

Carl Jung Superb Signed Letter, 1942

Fascinating autograph letter signed by Carl Jung, as "C.G. Jung", 2pp on one sheet measuring 7.25" x 8.75", composed to his mentee, psychoanalyst Dr. Rivkah Scharf Kluger, who at the time of this letter was helping Jung with his book "Psychology and Alchemy". Also included is a letter written by Dr. Scharf in response, thanking Jung for his empathy. Includes original mailing envelope and translations of both letters. Folds, minor scattered foxing, else near fine condition.

In this letter, Jung frequently references the "daemon" and its insatiable appetite, in response to a "wish" posed by Dr. Scharf. Jung tells her that he can't grant her wish even though he would like to, as it would temporarily alleviate her suffering.

Dated April 13, 1942 from Bollingen, Switzerland, Jung writes in full, translated from German, "Dear Miss! / I was not able to reply to you immediately; I still had to await a second letter. In principle, it is quite correct that you are approaching me with your wish. The request as such is correct in terms of its content as well, but it cannot be realized under the given circumstances. You must know, however, that expressing this wish, which in itself necessarily must go beyond the conventional limits, will awaken the daemon. The daemon is the absolute wanting-to-have-it-this-way and hideous suffering from the impossibility of fulfillment. Hence, since one would like to spare you this suffering, one feels under constant pressure to grant your wishes. However, the daemon is endless and it is never satisfied. You alone will have to voluntarily throw yourself to him every time. Nothing else will satisfy him. He must see that by destroying you he will destroy himself. And you will have to make this plain to him. / Miss von Franz is being presented as a 'good connection,' because she is not insatiable. Knowing that you are suffering so much is difficult for me, but I cannot help it. Besides, I know that this amount of suffering is necessary to make you as hard as you need to be in your life."
