Description
A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN SNUFF JARLET
Attributed to Jingdezhen, 19th century
Of cylindrical, tapering form with shoulders sloping to a waisted neck with flared mouth, and with a circular base, decorated using underglaze blue with a continuous landscape scene of a lake with a sampan floating on the water, overlooked by a scholar and his attendant from a rocky bluff on the shore, with fenced pavilions nestled among trees on the shore, a flock of geese flying formation in the sky, stopper. 2 1/8in (5.4cm) high
Footnotes:
十九世紀 青花瓷胎高士童子山水罐式鼻煙壺一件
或爲景德鎮製
Provenance:
Jung's Antiques, acquired October 28, 1995
Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 246
Among the hundreds of underglaze blue snuff bottles that were produced in the 19th century in Jingdezhen, there are a small group with a wide mouth and generally smaller in height. An example in The Crane Collection (www.thecranecollection.com, no. 334) has its original stopper, clearly illustrating that these 'jarlets' as they are known, were intended for snuff and were not converted miniature vases. A wide mouth such as this also allowed the owner to put dried flowers into the jarlet overnight to freshen the snuff.
