Description
Hungarian Hassidic "Shmirot" plate, the Szeged Jewish community, 1877. Made of 58 silver Krajczar coins from 1849. The center of the plate bears an engraved dedication in Hebrew and the back is inscribed in Hungarian (Szeged Community). Diameter: 12.5 cm. Weight: 145 grams. "Shmirot" is an ancient Hassidic custom: from time to time the Rebbe would hand out coins for blessing and protection.When many coins were accumulated, the custom was to make Kiddush cups or Tzedakah plates from them. These items were believed to be blessed.
