Description
A SMALL ELEGANT BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN TOGETHER WITH A WOODEN FIGURE OF A SCHOLAR
The Guanyin, 17th/18th century
The wooden (possibly boxwood) scholar, Qing dynasty, 18th/19th Century
The superbly-modelled well-cast standing Guanyin standing contrapposto on an integral footed rectangular stand and holding a scroll in her left hand which she holds across her body, whilst leaning her head slightly in the opposite direction causing her robes to fall in a slightly swirling motion around her body; together with a wooden, possibly boxwood, figure of a scholar seated on an integral Ming-style wood bench, wearing wide-sleeved flowing robes simply tied at his chest, his (real) left hand resting on his right leg and his right hand cupped, perhaps to hold a scepter, the delicately carved face with incisions to hold facial hair.
9in (22.8cm); 9 1/2in (24.1cm) high (2).
Footnotes:
十七/十八世紀 觀音大士銅像
清 十八/十九世紀 黃楊木學士坐像
For a similarly-sized standing bronze figure of Guanyin dated to the Ming dynasty, see Rose Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, Bamboo Publishing, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1990, pp. 82-85, fig. 69.
