The owner's family member acquired while traveling in Korea with a missionary who had served in both China and Korea in the late 1940s

This suite of woodcuts was produced by artists affiliated with the Lv Xun Academy of Art, which was established in Yan'an in 1938, an educational center with the purpose of training artists. The medium of woodcuts was embraced by the artists, following several successful exhibitions in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing in the early 1930s. For the Yan'an artists, this new form of expression provided a potent voice to register current events and societal issues in an inexpensive means.
