Description
Ship log for the ship "Swift" of New Bedford covering the period of December 17, 1848 to April 5, 1849 sailing from Calao (Peru) to New Bedford. Log accompanied by separate sheet titled "List of Ship Swift Sails". Sheet measures 13" x 16". Log book measures 13" x 8" and presents printed outline pages with manuscript fill-ins. Book presents 56 filled in pages detailing weather, sails used, heading, distance etc. There are two mentions of going after whales (January 5 and January 26). The ship was commanded by Spooner Jenkins. Spooner Jenkins (1819-1896) was a whaling captain out of New Bedford. In August 1852 to May 1854, he served as captain of the bark Henry H Crapo whaling in the Pacific off Chile, the coast of California, and the Galapagos Islands and from Nov 1854 until June 1859 he captained the bark Benjamin Cummings on a whaling voyage in the Pacific. Later in life Spooner Jenkins also held various town offices in New Bedford and Dartmouth Massachusetts. Provenance: Charles Lekites Collection.
