Description
Collection of 19th century photography including; 1.) Half plate ambrotype of knees-up seated Civil War officer wearing frock coat and rank straps of a lieutenant colonel. Family note identifies sitter as "Lt. Col. Milton Murat Price, died November 4, 1906". Milton Murat Price (1836-1906) was born in Pennsylvania, graduated from Massachusetts law school and moved to Davenport, Iowa. When the Civil War began, Price was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on October 16, 1861, and was mustered into service on October 22, 1861. He was wounded at the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862,. He resigned from service on April 26, 1862. After the Civil War, Price became a politician and diplomat serving as consul in Spain and in France. He died on October 24, 1906 in Paris, France. He is buried in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport, Iowa. His exact death date vs family note may be due to family notification. Ambrotype exhibits a diagonal crack across lower portion of sitter's body. Ambrotype housed in fitted standing frame/case. 2.) Half plate ambrotype of knees-up seated man in civilian clothes. Image exhibits loss to painted black backing. Image housed in thermoplastic union case "American Country Life" Berg #1-12. Case exhibits chip with loss near hinge on side. 3.) Quarter plate daguerreotype of knee-up seated woman. Image dates to early 1850's, and is by Easterly of St. Louis. Image housed in leatherette case and exhibits some slight weeping/residue to reverse of cover glass. 4.) Sixth plate daguerreotype of knee-up seated man. Image dates to late 1840's. Image housed in leatherette case (broken tape hinge) and exhibits some slight weeping/residue to reverse of cover glass. 5.) Ninth plate daguerreotype of two girls (one waist-up standing, other waist-up seated). Image dates to mid 1850's. Image housed in leatherette case. 6.) Ninth plate daguerreotype of bust view of young woman in profile and is by Anson, 589 Broadway, New York City (marked on mat and pad). Image dates to mid 1850's. Image housed in leatherette case. 7.) Sixteenth plate daguerreotype of bust view of man. Image dates to mid 1850's. Image housed in leatherette case with broken tape hinge. 8.) Paper photograph of painting housed in brass frame measuring 4" x 2.75". Collection housed in old pasteboard box with lid.
