A Rider in Waves
Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century
Kakejiku (hanging scroll) painted in ink and colors on silk with a Chinese scholar riding through crashing waves, with signature Ōkyo, dated Tenmei hinoe ushi chushun utsusu (Painted in mid-spring of 1786), and bearing two seals (each effaced)

Condition
Including, but not limited to the following:
Overall with darkening of the silk, toning and some surface water stains. There are some old horizontal creases in several spots--across to the top section across the rocks with some silk splits (7cm approx.); across the center just above the horse's head with a split (6cm approx.); and in front of the horses legs and on the chest, running across the rider's knee with silk splits (2, 3, and 6cm each approx.)-- all as visible in the illustration. Some light surface wear and associated minor loss to the gofun, as visible in the illustration.
