A Massive Porcelain Charger
Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, early 20th century
Skillfully painted in black, brown, green, and yellow enamels in the manner of a Chinese literati-style landscape painting with two travelers on mules and their attendant crossing a bridge in an impressive mountainous landscape, a lengthy poem in the upper right, the rim decorated with a wide band of gilt cherry-blossom chevrons on an orange iron-oxide ground, the underside decorated in underglaze cobalt with peonies and scrolling tendrils surrounding a geometric band encircling the foot, with seven spur marks, signed Nippizan Fukagawa sei and the mark of the Kōransha Company
