Kahlil Gibran published "The Prophet" in 1923 and saw immediate success, but its real popularity came after his death. It remains popular today, providing insight and spiritual significance to ordinary human experiences. Gibran is the third-bestselling poet in history after William Shakespeare and Laozi. Gibran poetically addresses topics such as "Love" and "Marriage" as well as more mundane ones like "Work" and "Talking". Gibran's "spiritual fiction" does not shy away from deeper aspects of human life, either. Almustafa, the prophet, speaks also about "Good and Evil", "Joy and Sorrow", and even "Death". The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.

"This Man from Lebanon" was written by a woman who spent the last seven years of Gibran's life with him. The author, Barbara Young, writes: "This book is not a rehearsal of genealogy, not a family tree. It is a simple story of the great man as I found him during the seven years that immediately preceded his death. The years when his gifts and his consciousness were at their height . . . "

Henrietta Breckenridge Boughton (1878-1961), better known by her pen name Barbara Young, was an American art and literary critic in the 1920s, as well as a poet. She met Kahlil Gibran at a reading of The Prophet organized by rector William Norman Guthrie in St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery and served as his secretary from 1925 until his death. She revised and published Gibran's book The Garden of the Prophet, after Mary Haskell made her revisions. Her book This Man from Lebanon: A Study of Kahlil Gibran was published by Alfred A. Knopf on January 15, 1945. Some of her writing was featured in Thomas Moult's anthology The Best Poems of 1931.
