Braxton Ponder (Alabama, 1915-2001) was a self-taught artist that began carving at age 71. This carved wood and paint assemblage on base, is signed on the base. Dated 1999. The 1999 book, Outsider Art of the South, by Kathy Moses, does an excellent sharing the background on Braxton Ponder. This carved assemblage of Ponder is one of the largest that we have idenfified or that is pictured in the book. And also the style is very unique. Ponder grew up in Arkanas and then left home on looking for larger meaning in at age 21. He was an army veteran of WWII and saw the horrors of Nazi Germany and just prior to leaving for various locations in the war, was married in 1942. His wife joined the Coast Guard at the same time. Although this had an impact on him, he also faced and embraced the trauma (unlike so many other veterans who were encouraged into silence), acknowledged it, and that forever changed him in the positive of ways. When he began carving, his primary focus was domestic and wild animals, Noah's Arks, Last Supper scenes. Normally Ponder adds a lighthearted nature to his carvings. 28.5"L x 15.5"H.
