David's family immigrated to the United States from LIthuania when he was at the age of six, and settled in the Boston area. After two years attending the Hebrew Teachers College (now Hebrew College) in Roxbury, David chose to study fine arts with Karl Zerbe at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
David's own paintings, charcoal drawings, and sculptures explore the religious imagery of his upbringing through figurative Expressionism. He founded what would become the College of Fine Arts at Boston University in 1955, established the University’s art gallery in 1958, and was appointed a tenured professor in 1962 where he remained until his retirement in 1989. His works are included in various prestigious permanent collections including: Art Institute of Chicago; Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts; Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; among several others.
