Pierre Nicolas Tourgueneff (French, 1854-1912), Bear
early 20th century, dark patinated bronze, incised artist signature in the base edge.
5 1/4 x 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.
Pierre's family surname was believed to be Tourguenev, but the spelling was changed to Tourgueneff after the family immigrated to France. Pierre was a student of the famous French animalier sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910). Similar to his teacher, Tourgueneff became well known as a figurative sculptor of animalia, equestrian figures, and other figurative subjects.
