Description
Federal Period
Custom "Protected" Style American Tin and Glass Lantern
c. 1795 Federal Period, Custom Wire Protected American Handcrafted Tin and Glass Lantern, likely for shipboard use, About Very Fine.
This unusual design candle Lantern measures about 16.5" tall x 6" square. Unique design in that there are three horizontal wire guards for protection of the glass on all 4 sides, one guard is loose, but still present and is included (for repair). Its hinged door has a fancy and very secure sliding locking mechanism. Just below the top tin suspension loop, it has a perforated tin chimney exhaust and a solid brass dome style top cap. Come with an original candle, which appears to be placed on a solid tin mount across the interior. Overall, wear from use and natural age patina, possibly from use on a ship per apparent traces of salt to the surfaces.
