Description
Up for auction is a rare amethyst and white jadeite Olmec mask, circa 900-400 BC. The Olmec people were located in present day Mexico from 1400-400 BC. The mask is not fully human, the jaguar was the animal mostly loved and represented by the Olmec with some details of the mask. The jadeite was a rare and hardstone to carve. The stones origin in Mesoamerica was the Motagua river valley which is the only source of Jadeite known. The mask is finely carved with almond shaped eyes, prominent nose, big tick leap traits commonly found in Olmec mask. Showing two holes on each side, used for hanging, the back has a concave carving. The mask measures 7 3/4 inches x 7 1/2 inches wide, shows signed of erosion which indicates it was exposed to water. Buyer is responsible for pickup and shipping.
