Description
This is one of a series of 4 images by Georges Mathieu commissioned by the Rhone Alpes region in France to promote its many scenic attractions. In this image, Mathieu suggests to the viewer the simple pleasures of sailing in Rhone Alpes from the blue water to the blue skies. Rhone-Alpes which is now part of Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, is a former region of southeast France that borders Switzerland and Italy. The Rhone-Alpes is centered in Lyon, one of France's largest regions. The Rhone-Alpes stretches from Lake Geneva to Provence, offering tourists and locals alike plenty of activities to enjoy. The Rhone-Alpes offers the most prestigious skiing areas in France, bountiful vineyards and canyons for visitors to hike, raft, drink and sail. Georges Mathieu (1921 - 2012) was a French painter and theorist who is credited with pioneering the Lyrical Abstraction movement, along with Informalism in post-WWII Paris. Mathieu's work values rhythm and movement, each of his paintings have an "action" characteristic, resembling the flow of calligraphy and representing the frenzy of the internal mind. His work can be viewed today in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
