Description
Maitres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Epoque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15-inch format, was put together by Jules Cheret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints was sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience, the publication showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format. This poster advertises for a show at La Pepiniere Theatre which is still in operation today in Paris. In 1920, theatre producer Raoul Audier changed the direction of La Pepiniere and invented with his partner edouard Beaudu, Les Goûters à la Parisienne, a two-hour show with a tea-concert. La Pepiniere, many times throughout history changed its artistic direction: Jean Charlot took over in 1924, Maurice Suez in 1926 and Marguerite Beriza in 1928. Raoul Audier returned the following year in 1929 and appointed poster artist Paul Colin to create the sets of the theatre's shows. Today, La Pepiniere can host an audience of 350 people and is home to director and actor Jean-Laurent Cochet's drama classes. The poster features a black background and an audience laughing at the show in front of them. An elegant woman in a bright red cape, at the center of the image is smiling along next to her date. The title of the show "Chauffons! Chauffons!" can be translated as "Hot! Hot!". Observed on the bottom right side of the poster, the show is revealed to have 2 acts, 3 tableaus and directed by MM. Fred Tony and J. Telloc. Jules-Alexandre Grun (1868 – 1934) was a French post-impressionist painter, poster artist, and illustrator. Grun's best known painting is called The Dinner Party, produced in 1911. It was, however, in the field of poster art and illustration, for which he was famous. He was employed at a large printing company in Paris and his artistic director was Jules Cheret. Cheret was also his main competitor in poster art. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. This poster has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition.
