Abraham Ortelius is one of the most prolific Dutch cartographers of the 16th-century. In 1570, Ortelius published what is often considered the most important, and first modern atlas of the 1500s, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This atlas was filled with impressive maps of the world and was wildly popular throughout Europe. Throughout the next decade. Ortelius published supplements to Theatrum, one of which was 1579 treatise Nomenclator Ptolemaicus. While Nomenclator did not include additional or new maps, it did include tables and charts categorizing places both ancient and modern throughout the known world.
This 1579 first edition was published by the famed Plantin Press in Antwerp.
