Die Symbolik der Yaka-Masken bezieht sich auf die Kräfte der Ahnen und spielt auf die Etappen der menschlichen Entwicklung an.

Die hemba genannte Maske erschien im Kontext der Initiations-und Beschneidungsriten der Knaben (mukhanda).

Zu einer Maske des gleichen Typs vermerkt Julien Volper (2021. La part de l'ombre. Sculptures du sud-ouest du Congo. Paris: Musée du quai Branly. Abb. 58.):
"Ces masques-heaumes à visage rouge et à la collerette de fibres bien taillées sont typiques de la région de Panzi. Mayamba représente un personnage féminin portant sur sa tête des zumbi (paniers à denrées). C'est un masque "mendiant" du mukanda de cette région qui réclame de la nourriture à ceux qu'il rencontre. Mayamba n'était pas détruit à la fin du mukanda mais conservé pour des usages futures."
