Rare Seat of War 1862 Civil War pocket map
Rare Seat of War 1862 Civil War pocket map
Item Details
Description
Very desirable and scarce large map of the Civil War issued during the early part of the war. Includes Virginia, Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay along with parts of other states. Depicts the entire Eastern theater of war, from Gettysburg south to northern North Carolina. This area was fought over repeatedly by the Army of the Potomac and Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The map was issued by the Colton firm for the benefit of people around the country to help them follow the war events. This particular example has undergone professional restoration at the horizontal center where it had split apart (obviously from much use), which suggests that it could have been used by someone connected in some way with the actual war itself. In 1862 the war was still in its infancy, but the locations where most of the significant battles were fought are identified on this map. Bull Run and Manassas Junction, where the first and second battles of Bull Run were fought, are clearly marked on the map. Gettysburg, Sharpsburg and Antietam River are here also identified, as well as Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor and other locations of major battles. Detailed cartography includes cities, towns, counties, major roads, railroad lines, canals and bodies of water. Mountains and hills are labeled and shaded with hachures. This impressive map is framed by a decorative border of intertwining vines and flowers. Counties are hand-colored in pink, pale yellow and greenish blue with the Chesapeake Bay in a lighter blue. The prime meridian of the map is centered on the District of Columbia. The map has undergone restoration along the main horizontal fold and other horizontal folds have been reinforced using techniques approved by professional restorers. A roughly ¾” x 2” missing section at the right center frame has been professionally replaced, as well as a ½” x 2” section at the left center frame. The pocket is in excellent condition with just pinpoint spots of fraying at the tips and spine ends. The rear cover has a small area that is wavy from exposure to water at some time in the past. This is now a completely intact map that will hold up for many lifetimes so long as it is not exposed to harsh conditions. 18.75 x 26
